When you have pesky fence posts that need removing it can be a hassle to do it alone. Pulling it yourself can be a challenge if it's really stuck in there (and it should be!) and other options seem as though they'd mess up your space.
Do you want to dig them out? Have fun damaging your lawn or workplace. Just going to chop them down and bury the rest? You won't be able to replace them!
You're going to tire yourself out if you do it by hand.
This is where post pullers come in. You can do the work of a handyman on your own with just one handy tool. But how do they work? Why do they make the task so much easier?
Keep reading to learn all about it.
Don't worry; we can break this down for you. Physics doesn't have to be complicated when you're relating it to tools and equipment.
When you're exerting force on an object, you're providing input force. In this case, if you're trying to pull up a fence on your own (with your hands), you only have the amount of input force that correlates with your strength.
When you're trying to get an object out of the ground, it's likely that it has more resistance than your input force can challenge.
This is why people created levers.
A lever is a simple machine used to minimize the required input force and maximize the output force. The output force is the force that's actually exerted onto the object in question (in this case, a fence post).
The outside force will be greater but cover less distance. Your input force will cover more distance (so the distance of your push will be greater than the left of the lever).
Levers can be as simple as crowbars. They've been used since ancient Egypt where Egyptians created simple mechanisms to build the pyramids.
Your post puller is essentially a complicated lever.
Your input force alone isn't enough to pull the fence post from its place. When you apply leverage to it, you're going to have a different experience. Even if you're not strong enough to budge the post on your own, the lever can still do its job.
You push your side of the lever (the side that you're exerting force on) down towards the fulcrum (or the center point of the lever). This force causes the other side of the lever (that's holding the post) to pull upwards releasing your post from the ground.
Are you tired of working to get fence posts from the ground? You can let a lever do the work for you. You don't have to break your back (or even break a sweat) to remove a post from the ground. Post pullers are here to save the day.
